How Is Your Posture?

Posture Spine

People who have asthma can have poor posture presenting hunching, forward head carriage and rounded shoulders. To help relieve this, a rolled towel can be effective by placing it horizontally between the shoulder blades while lying and taking big breaths for two to three minutes once or twice a day.

Good posture is so important for good health, and even more so for asthma patients. Good functional alignment with postural rehabiitation exercises can assist.

Spinal Degeneration (aka Osteoarthritis)

Disc Degeneration

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease or "wear and tear" arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic condition of the joints. It occurs when the cartilage or cushion between the joints breaks down leading to pain, stiffness and swelling.

Osteoarthritis has no age barriers and there is no known cure. The best treatment is to manage symptoms of pain, stiffness and swelling, improve your joint mobility and flexibility, of course having a healthy weight and exercising is key to your overall health.

If you think of your body as a machine, it must be nurtured and maintained to operate optimally just like any piece of machinery you use.

Ice v Heat, When Do You Use?

Ice v Heat MALWeb

Generally, use ice for acute injuries or pain, along with inflammation and swelling. Use heat for muscle pain or stiffness.

If you sustain a sprain or strain injury it gets worse later that night or the next day. The trick is to apply ice not heat, as heat encourages further inflammation, while ice reduces it.

Bending With Your Knees

Bending with Knees MALWeb

Bending and lifting with your legs avoids bending and straining to lift with your back.

As we are our muscles and ligaments become less flexible with the disks that act as a cushion between the bones of our spine and they become more brittle as we age. All of these things makes us more prone to having back injury as we grow older.

Through not bending and lifting correctly, injury can occur to your muscles, ligaments, or even the disks in your spine.

Whiplash

Whiplash MALWeb

This injury is most commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents, but whiplash can also occur with a sudden blow to the head from contact sports, or a slip or fall where the head is jarred or jolted.

The injury occurs when the head is thrown forward into hyperflexion and then backwards into hyperextension, thus causing torn anterior longitudinal and nuchal ligament damage. The severity of the pain will depend on the severity of the injury, although typically whiplash is not felt immediately at the time of the incident, but rather when the inflammation develops slowly over the following 12 to 24 hours and it is when this inflammation occurs that the pain is felt. It is best to keep the neck moving (gently) as much as possible and ice periodically for a couple of days and seek chiropractic aid.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Pins & Needles

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome web

TOS, aka Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, is a disorder when blood vessels or nerves in the space between your collarbone and your first rib (thoracic outlet) are compressed. This can cause pain in your shoulders, neck and numbness (pins & needles) in your fingers. While the cause of the compression varies, it can include anatomical defects, poor posture, trauma, repetitive activity, pressure joints, pregnancy.

Often people with TOS will wake up in the middle of the night with pins & needles in their hand and shake it off and the symptom goes.

Exercises can help, otherwise chiropractic adjustments to the neck and shoulder may be required to alleviate the compressed structures.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. If you find yourself in discomfort please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss what assistance can be offered to you.

Every Joint In Your Body Needs Movement

EveryJointMoves web

The human body was not built to be stationary for long periods of time. Every joint in our body needs movement. There are several types of angular movement, including flexion, extension, hyperextension, abduction, adduction and circumduction. Angular movements occur when changing the angle between the bones of a joint. Abduction is when a bone moves away from the midline of the body.

Irrespective as to how good your posture is, if you are in that one and same position for too long you will experience some form of discomfort.

Correct and maintain your posture and keep your joints moving for good health.

Breast Feeding Can Cause RSI

Breast Feeding

Motherhood has endless joys but it can also bring about endless pain to our bodies from all those new activities that we are not used to; like carrying a newborn baby around in our arms, bending over a change table or bath, reaching up hanging load after load of diapers and baby clothes on the line daily, and breast feeding on the same side can cause neck, shoulder, mid back pain and headaches.

While none of these tasks can be avoided, making sure you feed your baby on alternate sides can go a long way to reduce the strain risk to those muscles. Utilising a pillow under your arm for support so your wrist and forearm  is not bearing the weight of your baby will also help alleviate any potential problems.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. If you find yourself in discomfort please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss what assistance can be offered to you.

Sitting is the new smoking!

Sitting Skeleton FB

The number one thing that causes back pain is extended periods of sitting.

Various studies have produced evidence that:

  • Every hour of seated television watching we do cuts about 22 minutes off our life span. That was contrasted with this study which estimated that smoking shortens their life by about 11 minutes per cigarette.
      • The effects of long term sitting are not reversible through exercise or other good habits.
      • Sitting like smoking, is very clearly bad for our health. The only way to minimise risk is to limit the time we spend on our butts each day.
      • Healthier alternatives are active sitting on a yoga ball, a sit-stand desk or a treadmill desk, stand and stretch every hour.
      • Prolonged sitting increases the risk of developing several serious illnesses like various types of cancer, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Super Pulsed Cold Laser: Is M.E.L.T. the end of the ICE age?

Laser Image

New research has shown that using laser for sporting injuries achieves a far superior result than the old ICE treatment.

M.E.L.T. is the new formula for the healing of ligaments for long term strength and flexibility.

M is for movement/mobility of the affected joints / Chiropractic adjustments.

E is for the elevation, a natural way of decreasing swelling.

L is for laser, can be applied to the lymphatics and the local injured area.

T is for tape, creates a bio-mechanical lift of the skin from the soft tissues underneath, allowing more blood to flow for optimum healing.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. If you find yourself in discomfort please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss what assistance can be offered to you.

Back to School Backpack Tips

Back to School Backpack Tips

Children are at risk of spinal damage due to incorrectly packed and fitted school backpacks.

Adult back pain and spinal disorders may come from childhood activities including carrying an overloaded heavy backpack throughout their school life.

While many backpacks are fashionable, if they do not allow for even distribution of weight across the back then this can be a cause of back pain.

According to an international study, daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children causing fatigue by 65.7% and back pain by 46.1%1

Travel Tips from the Chiropractors' Association of Australia

Carrying Shopping Bags Evenly F

Travel Tips from the Chiropractors' Association of Australia

Holidays are fun and exciting! Everyone can't wait to go on holidays but there are some pitfalls to our good healthy spines which can be avoided so we don't end up in pain!
If you are travelling by car, bus or train:
1. Take regular stretch breaks at least every 1 to 2 hours.
2. Do some neck and shoulder exercises to help keep your muscles loose.
3. Remember not to slouch when sitting and stand tall.
4. If possible, take your pillow from home for continued good sleeping practice away from home.
Travelling by plane:
1. Stretch your legs and walk the aisles as often as practicable.
2. When seated, help circulation flow by regularly rolling your ankles in circles, point & flex your feet.
3. Be mindful when lifting your luggage. Bend with your knees, not your back.
4. Take a supportive neck pillow for neck support when sleeping on the plane.

Sleeping in a strange bed:
1. Sleeping on your back or side is preferable for good spinal health.
2. If the bed is too saggy, consider putting it on the floor.
3. Always stretch after sleeping.
For more travel tips for holidays to maintain your good spinal health, click here to view the Chiropractors' Association of Australia brochure or click here to visit their website for further helpful information.

Even the load on your spine this Christmas

Carrying Shopping Bags Evenly F

Even the load on your spine this Christmas for good spinal health!

Have you ever noticed how your neck naturally leans away from a heavy load you are carrying?

We do this naturally to try and balance the weight. However, if we do this for too long and too often, then you are setting yourself up for tension between the neck and shoulder area causing inflammation and pain.

So, how do we manage to keep good spinal health with all those Christmas shopping bags?

Whilst we like to be environmentally mindful by bringing an environmental shopping bag to replace store plastic bags, shoving everything into one bag can overload one side of your body, so it is best to bring a few enviro-bags with you to even the load both sides of your body, keeping your body balanced.

When carrying your shopping, keep your arms in an off-lock extended position with palms facing your legs. This keeps your wrists, elbows and shoulders in a less strained natural position avoiding muscle and ligament inflammation.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. However, if you find yourself in discomfort or pain, please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss your situation and what assistance can be offered to you.

So don't hesitate, call now on 4721 2143 to improve your quality of life.
