Breast Feeding Can Cause RSI

Breast Feeding

Motherhood has endless joys but it can also bring about endless pain to our bodies from all those new activities that we are not used to; like carrying a newborn baby around in our arms, bending over a change table or bath, reaching up hanging load after load of diapers and baby clothes on the line daily, and breast feeding on the same side can cause neck, shoulder, mid back pain and headaches.

While none of these tasks can be avoided, making sure you feed your baby on alternate sides can go a long way to reduce the strain risk to those muscles. Utilising a pillow under your arm for support so your wrist and forearm  is not bearing the weight of your baby will also help alleviate any potential problems.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. If you find yourself in discomfort please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss what assistance can be offered to you.

So don’t hesitate, call now on 4721 2143 to improve your quality of life.

Sitting is the new smoking!

Sitting Skeleton FB

The number one thing that causes back pain is extended periods of sitting.

Various studies have produced evidence that:

  • Every hour of seated television watching we do cuts about 22 minutes off our life span. That was contrasted with this study which estimated that smoking shortens their life by about 11 minutes per cigarette.
      • The effects of long term sitting are not reversible through exercise or other good habits.
      • Sitting like smoking, is very clearly bad for our health. The only way to minimise risk is to limit the time we spend on our butts each day.
      • Healthier alternatives are active sitting on a yoga ball, a sit-stand desk or a treadmill desk, stand and stretch every hour.
      • Prolonged sitting increases the risk of developing several serious illnesses like various types of cancer, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. If you find yourself in discomfort please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss what assistance can be offered to you.

Back to School Backpack Tips

Back to School Backpack Tips

Children are at risk of spinal damage due to incorrectly packed and fitted school backpacks.

Adult back pain and spinal disorders may come from childhood activities including carrying an overloaded heavy backpack throughout their school life.

While many backpacks are fashionable, if they do not allow for even distribution of weight across the back then this can be a cause of back pain.

According to an international study, daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children causing fatigue by 65.7% and back pain by 46.1%1

Travel Tips from the Chiropractors' Association of Australia

Carrying Shopping Bags Evenly F

Travel Tips from the Chiropractors' Association of Australia

Holidays are fun and exciting! Everyone can't wait to go on holidays but there are some pitfalls to our good healthy spines which can be avoided so we don't end up in pain!
If you are travelling by car, bus or train:
1. Take regular stretch breaks at least every 1 to 2 hours.
2. Do some neck and shoulder exercises to help keep your muscles loose.
3. Remember not to slouch when sitting and stand tall.
4. If possible, take your pillow from home for continued good sleeping practice away from home.
Travelling by plane:
1. Stretch your legs and walk the aisles as often as practicable.
2. When seated, help circulation flow by regularly rolling your ankles in circles, point & flex your feet.
3. Be mindful when lifting your luggage. Bend with your knees, not your back.
4. Take a supportive neck pillow for neck support when sleeping on the plane.

Sleeping in a strange bed:
1. Sleeping on your back or side is preferable for good spinal health.
2. If the bed is too saggy, consider putting it on the floor.
3. Always stretch after sleeping.

Even the load on your spine this Christmas

Carrying Shopping Bags Evenly F

Even the load on your spine this Christmas for good spinal health!

Have you ever noticed how your neck naturally leans away from a heavy load you are carrying?

We do this naturally to try and balance the weight. However, if we do this for too long and too often, then you are setting yourself up for tension between the neck and shoulder area causing inflammation and pain.

So, how do we manage to keep good spinal health with all those Christmas shopping bags?

Whilst we like to be environmentally mindful by bringing an environmental shopping bag to replace store plastic bags, shoving everything into one bag can overload one side of your body, so it is best to bring a few enviro-bags with you to even the load both sides of your body, keeping your body balanced.

When carrying your shopping, keep your arms in an off-lock extended position with palms facing your legs. This keeps your wrists, elbows and shoulders in a less strained natural position avoiding muscle and ligament inflammation.

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. However, if you find yourself in discomfort or pain, please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss your situation and what assistance can be offered to you.

So don't hesitate, call now on 4721 2143 to improve your quality of life.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics Seating Large

Sedentary positions is an occupational hazard to your spinal good health!

Any sedentary position (whether that be sitting at a desk or in a motor vehicle) held for an extended period of time will create pain issues for your back.

Occupational exposures to activities such as lifting, be that heavy or repetitive, can create lower back pain. Any prolonged posture will lead to static loading of the soft tissues and cause circulatory demands, coordination and motion control. The seated posture leads to inactivity causing an accumulation of metabolites, accelerating disk degeneration and leading to disk herniation.1)

Taking care of your health by preventative measures is always the best course of action. However, if you find yourself being in the category above, please make an appointment with Mary Anne Lowery Chiropractor to discuss what assistance can be offered to you.

So don't hesitate, call now on 4721 2143 to improve your quality of life.
